5 Strategies to Improve Your Technical English as a Software Student
Technical English: a very important skill in software
As software development students, one of our biggest challenges is not only learning to code, but also learning technical English. Most documentation, forums, advanced courses, and job opportunities are in English.
Here I share the mind map of strategies I use to improve my English skills:
1. Resources
There are great platforms to learn English for free:
- BBC Learning English - Structured and updated lessons
- Memrise - Vocabulary with spaced repetition
- YouTube - Technical English channels for programmers
2. Study Strategies
The key is consistency. My study plan includes:
- Make a simple study plan and practice 15 minutes every day
- Read Python documentation directly in English
- Watch tutorials in English without subtitles
3. Memory Techniques
To remember new technical vocabulary:
- Repeat new phrases and connect them with a simple drawing
- Make vocabulary cards with programming terms in English
- Connect technical words with the code you already know
4. Self-Tests
It is important to check your progress regularly:
- Record your voice reading technical documentation in English
- Do short online quizzes to check your understanding
- See your progress and reward yourself after finishing your study time
5. Tutoring and Practice
Do not learn alone:
- Practice with a classmate
- Ask your teacher for feedback on your written English
- Join programming forums in English like Stack Overflow
Remember: every line of code you write in English is also language practice. English and programming go together. Do not give up!
